Athens, Greece

Well it's been a about six days since I last made an entry. The new travel plans just arrived yesterday. Now on to Casablanca, oh hooray. I'd only been to Athens once before, and it's a pretty big place so we got lost on the way to Piraeus. Piraeus is the biggest port in Athens, and it was where our ship was leaving from. We asked around as best we could until a kind cab driver directed us to the subway (but he wouldn't except the Britsh currency which was all I had at that moment.). So we made a mad dash for the nearest subway station, and upon arrival realized we had just enough money to get us both on the train. As we dashed to catch the next train, we worried the boat might leave without us. We stood there in the train, and realized the AC had broken so it was topping a hundred inside, and there were no seats. Additionally a dog that was standing next to us urinated on the floor, isn't that special? So finally, after a pain staking twenty minutes, we exited the train and headed to the port. Our ship was still there waiting, and now we are off to Santorini. Thank goodness this day is over, it was murder.

Santorini, Greece

This place is just as excellent as I remember it from back in my youth. A quaint town built into the side of an ancient underwater volcano. Truly a magical site to behold. I believe this area is called Fira Town, but I may be wrong. We rode up to the city, from the docks, on donkeys. It really is a very enjoyable journey, albeit sometimes frightening. Once there we walked around looking at the view from every angle we could manage. There isn't much to do here, but just being here could keep me content for months. We ate lunch at a nice restaurant that was basically a giant balcony with an excellent view of the rest of the volcano. First I should probably elaborate, you see there was once a small island with a village on it. However, the island was actually a volcano which was sealed on the top. One day it erupted, but because of the island it couldn't just do so normally. Eventually it tore open the island, and the edges spread out in all directions, while the ocean poured into the volcano itself "killing" it. Now Santorini is an almost perfect ring of about four large islands. I hope that clears up the description, and so the rest. We had dinner at a big fancy place farther inland, and that's pretty much it. Tomorrow we're in Turkey, so until then.

Istanbul, Turkey
I really was reserved about coming back here, but I figured it would do well as a destination for informative purposes. As it was when I first came here, all people want to do is sell you furniture. They start a pleasent, friendly conversation with you, and then they try to sell you stuff. That way if you try to ignore them they make you feel like a real jerk. Anyway, it was still an enlightening visit, and Istanbul is still the greatest place for shopping I have ever been. The Great Bazzar was absolutely amazing, considering I didn't visit it the first time I came here. The missus bought some spices which I wasn't familiar with, but she claims they will make for many a good meal to come. We also bought some ethnic clothes, for reasons unknown, since England is too cold to put those kinds of clothes to use. We made a pleasent visit to the Blue Mosque, which is fun because you get a free felt dress with every visit. A funny thing to say the least. We also went across from there to visit the Hagia Sofia. A major Christian site just across the way from a major Muslim one, sounds like fun. A group of interesting men, with giant tea kettles on their backs, served us tea on the way. It was all good fun, but I can't wait to go to Cyprus tomorrow. Thus will begin my travels into places I have never been.
